Or the upline buys the downline buy giving them free products for a while to get the MLM prospect interested enough to at last get them to join. That's sort of like a loss leader, brib or incentive to get a person interested in the business opportunity. So this is sort of a means of purchasing a downline member.

Is this ethical. It depends on how it's done and what's involved. As long as it's not breaking any laws or rules from your MLM company then it's one option. However if you purchase downline members then the likelihood of them quiting is far higher. They're motivation is in the incentive, not so much in the opportunity itself. Remember the Beatles song "can't buy me loveeeee". Remember even if you could offer enough incentives, your downline who join won't be able to do that which is not sustainable. So keep that in mind okay.
